HbA1c, also known as glycated hemoglobin or hemoglobin A1c, is a blood test that provides an average measurement of your blood sugar levels over the past two to three months. It reflects the percentage of hemoglobin, a protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen, that is coated with sugar (glucose).

💢How It Works:
- **Hemoglobin** is the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen.
- **Glycation** happens when glucose in the blood binds to hemoglobin.
- The more glucose present in the blood, the higher the HbA1c level will be.
💢Importance:
HbA1c is a crucial test for managing diabetes. It gives a long-term view of blood sugar control, unlike daily glucose measurements which can fluctuate. This makes it an important tool for both diagnosing diabetes and monitoring how well it is being managed.
💢Normal and Diabetic Ranges:
Normal : Below 5.7%
Prediabetes : 5.7% to 6.4%
Diabetes : 6.5% or higher
💢Higher HbA1c levels are associated with an increased risk of diabetes-related complications, such as : heart disease , nerve damage, and kidney disease.
Therefore, keeping HbA1c levels within the target range is crucial for people with diabetes.
